LAUNCH PLASTIC WASTE AUDIT CAMPAIGN AT THE COLLEGE OF MACHINERY AND IRRIGATION
Following the workshop “ecological lifestyle and plastic waste reduction” intended for 21 managers and teachers of the College of Machinery and Irrigation, held at Doc Mo Farm, Tan Yen hamlet, Gia Tan 3 Commune, Thong Nhat district, Dong Nai province; the Programme “Reform of Technical and Vocational Education and Training” (TVET) in coordination with the Vocational College of Machinery and Irrigation (VCMI) and the Center for Development of Community Initiative and Environment (C&E Center) organized a workshop for students and launch plastic waste audit campaign, from April 08th to April 10th.
During the 2-day workshop, 30 students selected from faculties in the College were instructed by the experts of the C&E Center on environmental related content such as ecological footprints and lifestyle, economic circulation, plastic waste and garbage, and measures to deal with plastic waste. Under the vivid, realistic, and specific delivery and instruction by the experts, the students participated actively in group discussions and activities, learned basic knowledge about the environment and plastic waste, and began to be aware of the effects of the dangers from daily human activities on the environment, from which gave specific activities for themselves. “In the past, I thought that using nylon bags is very convenient for people and does not affect the environment. However, after the workshop, I realized that nylon bag is too harmful to the environment and people. Personally, I feel the need to have the right attitude and action to protect our environment. Protect the environment is protect each of us ” a student said.

On the morning of April 10, 2021, the opening ceremony of the waste audit campaign took place in the hall under building E and at the Campus of the College with the participation of representatives of GIZ – German development organization, Dong Nai Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the College, experts of C&E Center; Dong Nai Radio – Television to report, staff, teachers, and 200 students selected from the College faculties.
After the ceremony, 200 students participated in an ecological challenge at the campus. The students were divided into teams and try to overcome the challenge step by step. Each step is the activities relating to environmental knowledge and protection such as reusing plastic waste, composting microbiological waste from organic waste, … Such activities bring interesting and useful experiences to the students, help them to be aware of the environment and awareness of protecting it, at the same time these value and experience are conveyed and shared with their classmates and the people they live with.
The workshop and the opening ceremony of the plastic waste audit campaign are only scheduled in 03 days but has created a positive effect for all teachers and students of the College. Following the opening ceremony will be the waste audit campaign taking place until mid-May 2021 to evaluate the current situation of waste management at the College, thereby giving solutions to reduce waste, contribute to developing the College toward an environmental friendly training institution, and a center of excellence for Green TVET.
